Conservation 3.0: Green Cubes are Revolutionizing Forest Mapping

How Precision Technology Can Contribute to Rainforest Protection 🌳🛰️

As part of the *Vision 2045* campaign, which celebrates the 100th anniversary of the United Nations, we are presenting the joint rainforest protection project of the La Gamba university tropical station in cooperation with R-Evolution and Hexagon. 🎥 A new film shows how precision technology is being used to survey the La Gamba biological corridor, further highlighting the conservation value of these particularly species-rich forests. 🌱🌍

Using Hexagon’s airborne hybrid imaging and LiDAR sensors and accompanying ground mapping, over 100 square kilometers of tropical lowland rainforest in the La Gamba Biological Corridor (COBIGA) were surveyed in February 2024. 🛰️🌍

Every cubic meter of forest – the so-called “Green Cube” – offers a wealth of biodiversity 🌳🦜. Packed with information from one of Earth’s most complex ecosystems, the rainforest’s digital twin can, with three-centimeter accuracy, assess the health of tree canopies, examine root systems, or record animal sounds to document the immense biodiversity. Scientists on site are investigating various parameters and can use AI to extrapolate the data and ultimately evaluate the overall condition of the forests. Initial research projects by Austrian universities are already underway. 🧑‍🔬🌍

Old-growth forests, in particular, are indispensable for biodiversity but are often excluded from CO₂ compensation models. 🌳 We are convinced that thanks to precision visualization with Hexagon’s Digital Reality platform (HxDR) and the resulting digital twin as “Green Cubes,” the rainforest and its rich ecosystems can be better recorded and consequently more effectively protected. In this way, they make an important contribution to stabilizing the global climate. 🌎💚

Pura vida! 💚
